BORSIG supplies an important membrane-based subsystem for a large industrial heat pump for >10 MW thermal output.
An Italian machine and plant manufacturer required a solution for system-related refrigerant leakage for a complete industrial heat pump system, a so-called LHP system (Large Heat Pump), which is used in the pulp and paper industry. During operation, the refrigerant - consisting primarily of hydrocarbons - continuously and inevitably emerges from the mechanical seal of the compressor, the centrepiece of the industrial heat pump.
The BORSIG solution is our specially developed leakage gas recovery system, the so-called BORSIG Seal Gas Recovery Unit (SGRU), a system with selective membranes as a gas separation device for the recovery of highly volatile hydrocarbons, which are frequently used in refrigerants. A particularly unique feature of the SGRU is the leakage gas compressor used, which is driven leakage-free by a special drive technology with magnetic coupling.
In that way, around 55 metric tonnes of refrigerant per year - mainly hydrocarbons - are returned to the refrigerant circuit with a recovery rate of > 99.9% and do not end up in the environment. This is an important contribution to environmental protection and resource conservation. In addition, considerable costs for new refrigerant are saved.
